In Your Own Words:
The song, group or singer that sealed the deal for you wanting to be a musician/performer?
Janet Jackson. The first time I heard The Rhythm Nation album, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The funk, emotion, and joy that producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis brought to her albums inspired me to want to recreate that in my own music.

Who inspires your presence and performance today?
Artists that come to mind are St Lucia, Robyn, Vulfpeck, Blake Mills, Lake Street Dive, Scissor Sisters, Prince, Freddy Mercury, Elton John, Empire of the Sun. Electric artists with a clear vision and life giving energy within their music which translates to their stage personas.

To date, I am most proud of?
Singing the national anthem at Wrigley Field was definitely a highlight. I’m also proud of my band and what we’ve accomplished. Sharing music and brightening people’s lives is the ultimate to me.

Describe your personal style?
Simple, laid back, with a touch of flash.

If you had to write a song title to capture what’s happening today:
Eyes On The Horizon

If you could sit and share a meal with two to three people, who and why?
My dad’s parents, my Grandfather Leo and his wife Polly, my Grandmother. They passed away when I was 9 years old, before I was old enough to have an adult connection with them. From stories and video I’ve seen, they seem like they were the coolest.

How vital are musicians and artists in today’s climate?
Essential. In this era of confusion and uncertainty, some people I think have trouble finding the right words or emotions to express how they are feeling. If an artist can connect and share their experience, it can guide people to a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

You know you’ve made it when?
You need a bigger boat.

What would be your soundoff persona and why?
Lover. It’s slightly unrealistic, but I want everyone to get along and be able to see the love that is innate in all of us and focus on that. There’s enough bitterness and hate in this world, if we could all focus on love we might be able to make this world a better place.
